When there was no hope of his return, it was only when Okubo Toshimichi begged Shimazu Hisamitsu to risk his life to bring him back that he was able to turn him back to Satsuma. Above all, he was able to learn from his master, a master calligrapher and master of Chinese poetry, during his imprisonment.
